Never in my life has the phrase “whew child” been more useful than it is when describing some of my pregnancy symptoms. From backaches to mood swings, pregnancy has the power to change your body in a gazillion ways and all at once. I didn’t by any means think that it would be a walk in the park (as if walking is even all that easy to do nowadays) but there are some things that the girls left out when talking to the audience about pregnancy.
When my body started to change, google became my best friend and I constantly asked her whether the things that were going on with my body were normal pregnancy symptoms or just delusions. Even when I was convinced that I was the only one dealing with a certain sensation, I was proved wrong. They turned out to be pretty common. Every pregnancy is different but if you’ve been experiencing some things that you’ve never heard of, take a look at the quick list below. Here are 4 unusal pregnancy symptoms that I’ve been experiencing.
1. Itchy Skin.
Baby! This is not number 1 on my list for no reason. I’ve always suffered from sensitive skin. Certain materials bother me and my skin has the tendency to dry out if I’m being careless. However, nothing could’ve prepared me for the annoying itchiness I experienced and am still experiencing all over my body. I don’t itch in the palms of my hands or on the bottom of my feet but best believe that every other piece of my body is intruded by the edges of my fingernails and by the bristles of hair brushes- for extra itch relief.
The cause: According to The American Pregnancy Association, as your blood supply to the skin increases it is very common to experience mild itching. You may also experience itching as the skin on your abdomen stretches. One woman said that she experienced intense itching and in her case it ended up being an allergic reaction to pregnancy- specifically the hormones. Considering that I have a lot of allergies related to birth control, this wasn’t far-fetched for me to believe. Intense itching may be something more serious so check with your doctor. Even though I felt like my itching was more than just mild, my doctor assured me that I was fine.
2. Numb legs
With the extra pounds pounding through, getting comfortable has been difficult especially when you’ve finally found a cozy position only to be interrupted by itching numbness in your legs. When my stomach was a little smaller and lying on my back was still an option, my right leg would always get tingly and numb. I thought something was wrong but the internet came to my rescue again.
The cause: According to MedlinePlus.gov and FamilyDoctor.org, the pressure of your growing uterus and overall swelling in your body may press on the nerves in your legs causing that numb and tingly sensation.
3. Nasty Aftertaste
I love seafood but pregnancy has me in the bathroom, hunched over the toilet begging the Lord to take it all back after I’ve consumed it. Even when I ate things that my body could tolerate, I would always seem to leave the dinner table with a bitter or sour aftertaste in my mouth. Even if I didn’t eat anything!
The cause: According to utswmed.org, Dysgeusia may be the reason. Dysgeusia is defined as the change in your sense of taste during pregnancy. It is likely caused by pregnancy hormones. “It may cause you to hate a food that you normally love, or enjoy foods you normally dislike. Sometimes it can cause a sour or metallic taste in your mouth, even if you’re not eating anything.”
4. Cracking of the Butt Crack
Yes! My ass crack cracked. Not the whole crack but the top of it. I don’t know how or why it happened and I was unable to find any real medical explanation. However, in my research I found that I was not the only pregnant girl that this has happened to.
The cause: After searching through tons of pregnancy message boards, I found that no one had an exact answer but many people suggested that dry skin could be the culprit. According to a blog post in the “What To Expect” pregnancy app, many women experience drier and stretched out skin during pregnancy. This could also be a factor of the itchiness I experienced. I lathered my crack with vaseline and after two days my ass was back to brand new.

I’ve had the butt crack thing too! I think its been dry skin but it also happened around the same time I really noticed my hips widening (they got much wider and its left very noticable stretch marks on my butt too). I’m now pretty convinced the crack was from the widening of my hips?? Thoughts?
